Founded on the 22nd April 1899 at a meeting at the White Hart Hotel, originally as the Mersea Sailing Club by a group of prominent London businessmen. The minute book records that the original membership was 46 gentlemen and 63 vessels and that the rules of the Essex Yacht Club were adopted. The Club moved to it’s fiirst clubhouse, the Houseboat “Evandra” in 1906 until due to a lack of sailing during the First World War the houseboat was sold in 1916.
